Ancient Ostia

The historical and literary tradition ascribe the birth of Ostia to the fourth King of Rome, Anco Marzio, who would reign over Rome between 640 and 616 BC.
Ostia was the first Roman colony and, at the beginning, worked as a military outer port of the Eternal City for the expansion iin the Mediterranean.
With the fall of the Roman Empire there was the beginning of Ostia’s decadence. The first excavations with a scientific purpose started with Pio VII and continued with Pio IX in 1800.
Recently there was the discovery of mosaics, paintings, mitrei, tombs, thermae, roads and an amphiteatre that, still now, is the venue of many relevant cultural events during summer.
